So..finally and again we glad to present Gimu and Emily and their Caterpillars Dressed In Their Finest. Their second album called “Somewhere In Between”. Emily wrote and record the poetry and Gimu creates the sound around the music. The idea of the album is to place poetry in a wall of sound. Sometimes you can hear the poems, sometimes they are built in as a part of the music. They both wanted to work together as soon as meeting through the internet. In hopes that they could create something different together. Second album is full of details and some inner emotions. The sound became denser and more saturated. Poetic monologue appear from nowhere and are dissolved in the waves of sound as in the sea. Music reflects the mood of the poet as well as personal experiences of a musician. Filing of space, isolation and loneliness impact in the visualization and design the album. Iceland..

“Young Galaxy” is second album by the Picturesque Episodes released on Pocket Fields. Ranging from lullaby-like string ambiance to noisy repetitive breakdowns and accidental noise records; from distortion driven post-rock to glitch minimal; from obscure noise to polished pop songs - THE PICTURESQUE EPISODES covers much musical ground and include many diverse music genres with exceptional attention to the narrative structure of music.
It does serve as a part of the Picturesque Episodes’s sci-fi story. This story already now includes 4 albums - “Constellations”, “Cosmogenesis”, “Endless Lullabies” and “Lonesome Sky In H Minor”. It’s a collection of memories and a story of losing your loved one without ever being able to say ‘goodbye’.

Bardoseneticcube was formed in summer 1998. The most precise definition of their music is surrealism: “pure psychic automatism willing to express the real functioning of the reflection either orally or written, or in any other form. Dictation of mind without any control from the intellect, outside of any aesthetic of moral considerations”. During it’s lifetime the project has released more than 20 albums in Russia and abroad, took part in various compilations and festivals. Bardoseneticcube was involved in several sound installations. The project’s live shows are usually supported by video which is considered the integral part of the performance. This is always improvisation in which both listeners and acoustic characteristics of the space are involved. The live sound stylistically varies from techno-shamanic trance to the baffling harsh-noise and electro-acoustic experiments. Application of the original sonic “system” and psychoacoustic apparatus allows the band to achieve the unbelievably wide frequency range, from infralow to ultrahigh. The project members professionally and with dilettantish persistence extract sounds from everything that can sound: computers and contact mics, ethnic instruments and electronic processing, water and field recordings, all this happens during conducting pseudo-magickal rituals and materializes in surreal sonic pictures which don’t have any relation to music, both in ordinary and “not ordinary” meaning of this term. Or maybe they are just pulling your legs..

In near future on Pocket Fields:
Bardoseneticcube “REAG”

Daniel W J Mackenzie, perhaps best known through his nickname Ekca Liena, has gradually made a name in the English underground music. Light Procession is his 9th album approved by the Pocket Field label based in St. Petersburg.

2 weeks to wait for the jewel. More than 2,000 km as the crow flies to transport the package. I press the play button, having a vague idea of the result thanks to the preview that you can listen on the label website. This album is a true thermal shock in a (almost) sunny June like that, it seems like striking of depth. The six tracks which make up this Light Procession form a purely dreamlike cocktail of styles.

Channel, the opening track, is simply brilliant: the layers merge with our neurons and transport us to an electric, thick and buzzing drone/noise.

Like a Nakamal with its introduction strangely frightening and ambience recorded as thousands of kilometers offshore, Ekca Liena’s music sometimes move on tribal sounds through the songs, also taking as an example Stratos Fire, which pitches us all of a sudden a totally wild and transcendent drum. Icy drones and jovial rhythmics crashes, with a quite surprising result.

With the first part of the diptych Aileron, the English man shows a real talent for beautifully delicate and uncluttered ambient. The closing track is to me the best, thanks to the omnipresence of strings and the surrounding suspense which prevails until the end of Ember Shimmer’s 10 minutes.

The CD is produced in limited edition to 100 copies, with at stake a nice hand-made fabrication. I suggest you listening to the preview linked higher, and why not get a copy

Have Faith!

“Pocket Suite” is EP composed by He Can Jog - american computer musician Erik Schoster. In 25 minutes of “Pocket Suite” we find all features of modern electronica: digital glitch textures, dronescapes, bitstream ambience, mention of melodic, microsound. This music is generated with a system that Erik Schoster`s worked on in the python programming language called ‘fabric’. Fabric is a work in progress, and this music was written during a pretty early stage of its life.
‘Sending dreams to she downstream’ takes its title from a poem by WC Tank. Erik was interested in messing around with rhythm and seeing what was possible with the synthesis routines he’m working on in fabric, so this one has things in it that resemble rhythm from time to time.
‘Goat formants’ is for william the goat and is mostly manipulations of a recording of his goat voice.

A collection of python scores for the Pocket Fields label.
Fall 2011 - Winter 2012

Andrew Lahiff – Quiet Correlations

Andrew Lahiff, a composer of ambient, space and electronic music, started to make his music available via the web in 2002. This is his nineteenth release, and his first to be issued on the Pocket Fields netlabel.

Andrew opens the album with “An Image of the Earth”, which glides in and pins the listener into a space between bass and high treble. Liquid notes flow across the room, burbling and gurgling gorgeously as the track opens out. Little high notes dance elegantly above huge organic pads, evoking the beauty of the earth’s globe balanced perfectly in space. Next, “Oak, Snow and Ice” finds us in winter, but with a warm glow from the sun, even in this cold. The use of the stereo soundfield here is vibrant and engaging. Gentle metallic coils suspend themselves above reverb-laden pads, which become notes, which become pads again.

Track three, “The Dream Lives Forever”, is the album’s longest, running to eleven minutes. It’s very enigmatic. Moving slowly, and almost with hesitation, it shifts across long spans of scintillating synth chords in a soft ambient swathe. This is truly ethereal and sublime music. In “Alpine Glaciers”, gentle drips of melting iceflows tap away at the surface below, as we observe the endless conversion of ice to water. Cold, yet with an ever-beating heart of warmth inside.

“Stones and Ornaments” places us among both forgotten and remembered objects. A sense of nostalgia is ever present, but it’s almost as though we’re not sure what it is that we’re trying to remember. Stones and ornaments can be one and the same, but there is internal conflict in the music about which of those we see. In “Cliffs at the Edge of Time”, there’s a sense of unease and foreboding. This piece isn’t dark, but it seems to be full of questions about the future. Crackles ripple off to the left and right, and the structured centre tries to halt that fragmentation with a long, shifting pad which appears and recedes again, and is gone.

The final third of “Quiet Correlations” starts with “New Beginnings”, a tender piece which has just the right amount of yearning for the birth of something new. Never cloying, never over-seasoned, it’s life-affirming in a subtle, positive way. Something new is definitely upon us. “Luminous Approaches” begins as the edgiest piece on the album, heralding imminent changes which bring with them a degree of internal conflict. The instrumentation here is wonderful; everything is in exactly the right place. The highest notes of the music hang over us like a thin, gently moving canopy.

The penultimate track “Follow the Mountains” is somewhat mysterious. Long ambient pads stretch out, as far as we can know. The planet turns slowly, and distant creatures cry out in the night. There’s a sense of everything moving back into the right place – into correct, new-yet-familiar spaces. It’s disquieting, but not foreboding. The track closes with a repetitive synth trill which fades into silence.

For “Night on the Plateau”, we are left feeling chilly and bereft of shelter. Cold pads draw out in long voices. The noises of the unsettled night creatures continue; periodically, a bell rings as if to draw them ever closer. The album draws to a close with a seemingly unanswered question.

Andrew recently joined the roster of the wonderful Relaxed Machinery label, and his first release there is highly anticipated, both by the label and by this reviewer.
